Oracle - The Original Batgirl

The following information relates only to my variation of the Batman Universe and does not tie into any existing Batman universes.

Born the daughter of future Commissioner James Gordon, Barbara spent her early years in relatively blissful ignorance of her father's risky job as a cop on arguably the most corrupt police force in the country. She spent much of her time tinkering with an old computer that her father had secured during a Police Auction. As she grew older, she began to understand just how dangerous her father's job was, especially as she noticed uniformed officers doing things that were very clearly against the law such as stealing, petty theft, abusing suspects, and other issues. She noticed her father never did this and was easily the only honest cop on the force. Her mother eventually divorced her father and took her older brother James with her, with Lieutenant Gordon managing to retain custody of Barbara.

By her teen years, Barbara had become somewhat self reliant and a capable hacker. It was about this time that rumors started circulating of a Batman waging a one man war on crime. Jim was under orders to apprehend the Batman but the more both he and Barbara saw him work, the more convinced they became that the Batman was a force for good. Barbara eventually met the Batman face-to-face when he intervened to stop a mafia hit on Jim, Batman whisking Barbara away in the Batmobile and singlehandedly taking on the hitmen. After the Joker murdered Commissioner Loeb and the corrupt SWAT team leader Branden was ousted from his position, Barbara watched her father ascend to become Commissioner of the GCPD and begin a radical sweep of cleaning out the GCPD of its corrupt elements.

Barbara watched Batman from the sidelines, maintaining contact with him via the Batwave communication system which she had managed to hack. By her mid-teens, she had constructed a bat-suit of her own and struck out to try and assist the Batman in his war on crime. Although reluctant to accept her assistance given the fact she was the Commissioner's daughter, Batman finally agreed and revealed his secret identity as Bruce Wayne. Barbara had suspected Wayne was the Batman as he was the only one with the finances and access to the technology to be the Batman but had no evidence to back up her theories until that point. Batman provided her with a better bat-suit and christened her Batgirl, giving her the necessary training and equipment to function to the fullest of her ability.

When Dick Grayson/the First Robin, joined the Teen Titans in Jump City as Nightwing, Barbara stayed behind as Batman's sidekick. They were soon joined by Jason Todd who would become the Second Robin. Although there was some friction between her and Jason, she did her best to work with him. Unfortunately this partnership was not to be as Jason was murdered by the Joker. Batgirl and the returned Nightwing attempted to keep Batman's fury over losing Jason in check but neither could ignore his increasingly violent methods. It wasn't until the appearance of Tim Drake as the Third Robin that Batman's fury would subside.

For a while, the Batclan became a force to be reckoned with amongst the criminal underworld as Batman, Robin, Nightwing, and Batgirl maintained a constant vigil over Gotham. This vigil lasted for over a year until tragedy struck. On an unassuming evening, Barbara was ambushed in her apartment by the Joker who proceeded to shoot her at point blank, paralyzing her from the waist down. He then proceeded to take candid photographs of her wounded and naked form before abducting the Commissioner and using the photographs in a failed attempt to drive the Commissioner insane. Joker ended up in Arkham Asylum in a body cast for six months but Barbara was forever taken out of commission as Batgirl, forced into a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

Despite the loss of her legs, Barbara quickly found a new means of working with the Batclan. Adopting the identity of Oracle, Barbara became the Batclan's dispatch and information broker. The clock tower in her apartment building was converted into her headquarters as Oracle and her chair was modified and customized. To the naked eye, her chair is an ordinary wheelchair but in truth her chair is equipped with a series of state of the art technology and equipment to help make her job as Oracle much easier while on the go, such as a holographic computer display and emergency automated brakes. She also owns a power chair with even more features but she tends to use the regular wheel chair to keep her strength up.

Barbara's relationship with her Batclan teammates has been some of the strongest in her life. She gets along well with Tim Drake who, despite his friendly flirting, wouldn't actually make any legitimate moves on her. Her relationship with her replacement, Cassandra Cain/Blackbat, is strong as well, the younger Blackbat relying on the older Batgirl to help advise and guide her. Her relationship with Batman was a little one sided. She briefly assumed Batman had a romantic interest in her, something she was slightly open to but quickly learned it wasn't the case. Her relationship with Dick Grayson/Nightwing is arguably her strongest, the pair being considered a couple ever since her early days as Batgirl. Despite her paralysis, Dick has remained one of her strongest and closest of allies. Her father has also voiced his own approval of the match although he remains unaware of their secret lives as two of Gotham's vigilantes.

Her father, Commissioner Jim Gordon, is a notable question mark. Despite their strong father/daughter bond, Barbara has never confided with him her secret life as Batgirl/Oracle. She deliberately uses a voice synthesizer system to disguise her voice when communicating with him directly as Oracle. It's unknown if he's deduced her secret identity either but it's believed that he suspects her role but deliberately doesn't push the matter as "the less he knows, the better."

Barbara also operates as the leader of the Justice League team known as the Birds of Prey, a team consisting of Huntress, Black Canary, and Lady Blackhawk.
