Stephanie Brown had an unhappy childhood. Her mother had abandoned the family and disappeared after her father, Arthur Brown became a criminal. His crimes were small but he always had a compulsive need to leave clues behind. He was finally caught by then-Captain James Gordon and sent to Blackgate Penitentiary, leaving Stephanie behind in the system. Stephanie was bounced from foster home to foster home, usually trying to make a concerted effort to fit in and be a good child but found it difficult. Her hatred at what her father had become kept her away from a life of crime.

Years later, now fifteen, Stephanie was reluctantly reunited with her father who, at first, appeared to have cleaned up his life and abandoned his criminal ways. Stephanie soon learned that this was a ruse and he had continued his life of crime only now without his compulsive need to leave clues behind. Angered at this, Stephanie fashioned a costume for herself, taking the identity of "Spoiler." As Spoiler, she worked to thwart her father's criminal dealings by leaving clues of his crimes behind. She had intended for the GCPD to follow the clues but was surprised when she came face-to-face with Batman and Robin (Tim Drake). Her information proved vital for the Dynamic Duo who apprehended Cluemaster and had him sent back to Blackgate. However, he was later transferred to Belle Reve at the request of Amanda Waller's Project CADMUS.

After helping to bring down her father, Stephanie was put back into the system, only now she had a friend and ally in Robin. Robin himself had taken a liking to her but Batman forbade Robin from dating her, not fully trusting her. He finally agreed to let Robin meet with her under the condition that he use an alias and wear a disguise. Robin assumed the alias of Alvin Draper which he was up front with Stephanie about. She's accepted this compromise for the time being and has proven an occasional ally and asset to the Batclan. Robin put Stephanie in touch with Oracle who has put her to work with some odd jobs for the Batclan. Stephanie goes about this work without complaint, believing it'll eventually lead to a payoff in terms of Batman warming up to her.

Stephanie is usually a relaxed girl, going about her life one day at a time. She does get agitated when her father is mentioned, holding him solely responsible for any unhappiness in her life. She works part-time at a local fast-food restaurant, Big Belly Burgers, which has sometimes been frequented by Draper. As Spoiler she is fairly skilled and sneaking around unnoticed, a skill honed by years of sneaking away from her foster parents on a regular basis (one of them being an ex-prison warden). She's not as acrobatic as Robin and can be easily beaten in hand-to-hand combat by the Batclan and more experienced combatants. On Batman's order, Nightwing has given her some hand-to-hand combat training, improving her overall skill. She is quietly disconcerted by Blackbat/Cassandra Cain, her constant silence making Brown consistently uneasy, unaware that Blackbat is a mute.
