The daughter of famous stage magician Giovanni "John" Zatara, Zatanna grew up loving the family business and began practicing to become a magician herself, something her father had no objections about. During her preteen years, she met "John Smith," a slightly older boy who became apprenticed to Giovanni. She became infatuated with "Smith" but Smith politely rebuffed her, focusing on his apprenticeship and an unstated mission. Smith would eventually finish his apprenticeship after a year before departing for places unknown. Zatanna would eventually become a talented stage magician but also learned from her father about the use of actual magic, literal sorcery. Zatanna became a powerful sorceress and quickly became a terrific stage magician, making a name for herself and even headlining her father's shows.

Eventually, Giovanni passed away, leaving Zatanna on her own. Undaunted however, Zatanna continued her tours across the country and has even done more than a few international tours, surpassing Giovanni's success. When her tour passed through Gotham, Zatanna was framed for grand theft by a famous magic debunker, Dr. Montague Kane, but was rescued by the mythical Batman. While helping to clear her name, Zatanna recognized Batman as "John Smith" but when he unmasked, recognized him as Bruce Wayne, the billionaire and playboy. He apologized for deceiving her and she readily accepted his apology, her childhood crush on him having never waned. Eventually her name was cleared, Kane being arrested for the crime.

Afterwards, Zatanna decided to lay down roots in Gotham, purchasing a mansion in Gotham as well as a dilapidated old nightclub which Wayne paid to help restore. Her mansion, Shadowcrest, is but one of her homes. She has an apartment in the building behind her club which she uses primarily for public meetings as Shadowcrest is filled with books and tomes on magic and sorcery as well as several magic items that are better left forgotten and ignored by the normal world. Her club, the Rabbits and Hats Club, is a family magic club which hosts magicians and magic acts from across the globe.

Zatanna is a part-timer with the Justice League, assisting the League with issues that cross into the realm of magic and sorcery. Dr. Fate is the League's fulltime magic user but Zatanna's expertise is invaluable and called upon when Dr. Fate is unavailable. Zatanna is always Batman's first choice for magic assistance however. If ever having to operate with the League in public, Zatanna wears a mask that obscures her identity and distorts her voice and uses her JL codename: "Magician" as her field name.

Zatanna's magic operates mostly by orally saying a word or phrase backwards, a difficult ability to perfect but Zatanna has done just that. She possesses limited hand-to-hand fighting ability though and relies more on her magic to fight. Subsequently she rarely operates in the field in public. She's also written a best selling book called "Hex Appeal: The Modern Girl's Guide to Magic." Her autobiography "Top Hats and Fishnets" while still popular hasn't sold quite as well.

Zatanna still has an unrequited attraction towards Bruce Wayne/Batman, but understands his stance on romantic attachments and keeps her distance. She's served as his arm candy though on more than one occasion though. She's good friends with Barbara Gordon/Oracle and was one of the few people outside of the Batclan and Barbara's immediate family who visited her in the hospital after the Joker paralyzed her. Most people who know Zatanna personally call her "Zee" for short. Her preferred internet username is "ZZTopHat" which was born from a joke Tim Drake/Robin made in passing.
