Description

This is the flag of one of the factions in my Star Trek Fanfiction Series: Star Trek: Corbulo. The Series is not currently in production.

The image was created in Microsoft Paint.

Name: The Unity
Founding: 2178
Size: 32 inhabited systems, at least 9 Warp-Capable species, 5 subjugated pre-warp species.
Captial: Unity Central (Starbase located within the center of Unity Space)
Governing Body: The Unity Council.
Cultural Data: The Unity is best described as a smaller-scale version of the Federation only less concerned with exploration and more focused on their own improvement. The Unity originally started much like the United Federation of Planets did, four alien races coming together to form an alliance and eventually forming a more unified and centralized civilization. The Unity is actually more of an unhappy medium between the Federation and the Borg in that if they find a civilization with something that would benefit the Unity in some way, they first extend an "Offer of Unity" to give them at least one chance to join peacefully. Otherwise, they're forced into the Unity at phaser point and usually become almost akin to a slave race.

The Unity's parameters for selecting a civilization for "Unification" vary depending on what the Unity may need at a given time. For example, if there's a labor shortage, they'll invade and subjugate a suitable pre-warp civilization and use them to resolve the labor shortages. If a unique piece of technology is developed that would give the Unity an edge in the future, they'll conquer the species that developed it, seizing the technology for themselves and depriving anyone else of the technology. Any species caught utilizing the technology that isn't a part of the Unity, regardless of if the technology was developed on their own, is confronted by the Unity and in most cases forced to surrender the "offending technology" or risk extermination.

Each species within the Unity is given some kind of social ranking which determines the level of legal rights they have within the Unity, ranging from powerful member races to poor and abused servant races.

Uniter: Uniter is the highest species rank of the Unity and is a title held by only five races, four of which were the original founding races. The fifth was elevated to Uniter rank after they proved instrumental to the Unity in some way at some point in the past. Uniter species enjoy the most liberties within the Unity and carry the most power and wealth. Uniters are allowed to own slaves or indentured servants from the lowest of the social ranks. Uniters in the Unity Military are always Officers.

Contributor: Contributors are mostly the races that joined the Unity voluntarily and peacefully when they received their Offer of Unity. They're allowed to own businesses and make up the bulk of the manpower within the Unity. Contributors are usually the ones who've contributed the most to the Unity and continue to do so. Contributors cannot achieve an Officer's commission within the Unity Military but they can come close by becoming an Officer's Ward, allowing their contributions to the military to be implemented vicariously through their assigned officer. Contributors make up the bulk of the military's manpower. There are only 3 Contributor races within the Unity.

Servitor: The lowest social rank within the Unity. Servitor is essentially a fancy word for slave. Servitor races have few rights and are forced to work for Contributor or Uniter races. This work can mean anything from menial labor, factory work, farming, limited medical work, and others. Some of the more heinous treatments that Servitors receive is use as test subjects for medical experiments, weapons testing, or even as comfort women. Legally the only protection they get is that they must be provided adequate food, housing, and medical treatment by their owners/employers and there are some safeguards to ensure they receive fair treatment in this regard. Giving a Servitor race a food they cannot survive on and claiming they've been fed, for example, is illegal. Servitor races may not serve in the Unity Military and may not even possess a weapon to avoid uprisings. Of the six servitor races, only 3 were warp-capable at the time they were inducted into the Unity and were inducted at Servitor level because they refused the Offer of Unity and were subsequently inducted by force. The rest were all pre-warp beforehand and inducted for one reason or another.

Prisoner: The absolute lowest of the social ranks within the Unity. Prisoner is basically the punishment for species that had the nerve to attack the Unity. They are forced to remain on their homeworlds, stripped of all flight technology, including atmospheric craft, limited to natural power sources, and forbidden from developing projectile based weapons including as simple as a slingshot. They are not even recognized as a member of the Unity and thus are not protected by the Unity's legal system.
